Welcome

Welcome to Homestead Advisor !

If you’re thinking about starting a homestead, or becoming more self-sufficient, you’ve come to the right place.

We’ll be discussing gardening, fruit production, raising fish, bees, livestock and just about everything else related to starting, or continuing to build your homestead.

It’s about making you and your family as self-reliant as possible.

Emergency preparedness will also be a large part of this website. We’ll be taking on topics like living “off-grid”, storing food, preserving your own produce and living a more sustainable lifestyle.

Whether your “homestead” consists of several acres, or a small backyard, there are many ways to make the transition toward sustainability. You CAN be less dependent on others, and learn to rely more on your own skills.

We’ll also be reviewing products that are essential to every homesteader and some that are just cool to have. There will also be guest bloggers from time to time giving expertise on various subjects.

So, I hope you’ll stick around and make this a “Favorite” place on your internet journeys. Check out the “Blog” page, as well as the “About” page to find out more about what we’ve done (and what we are currently doing) around the farm.

Be sure and look at the Greenhouse Page. I’ve designed a PORTABLE Greenhouse that you can build in just a few hours. But it also makes a great Garden Shed, Chicken Tractor or Goat/Livestock Shed.

So take a minute to look at the Greenhouse Page

I’ve also written an E-Book, that details the construction step-by-step. The Greenhouse E-Book also includes a material list as well as drawings of all the parts. There are tons of pictures too. And, I’ll show how to turn this design into a permanent structure by using corrugated metal for the top instead of plastic. You CAN use a tarp as a roof, but metal is forever.

I hope you’ll take a peek at the Greenhouse E-Book. It’s very reasonably priced considering the information it contains.

Take a peek at it on my STORE page under CATEGORIES.

Here’s also a link to it:

Greenhouse E-Book

***NEW***

If you would rather have a PDF document that you can print out, you can now get the plans, materials list (and the extra section dealing with adding corrugated metal to make a shed) in PDF format. I will send the PDF directly to your email for your convenience !

Hi, we just purchased our first home a year ago. We were excited to have a mature apple tree in the backyard. Well, the apples became ripe, but none of them were good because something had dug holes from the bottoms of the apples and rotted them all out. Is there a safe way to prevent this from happening next year?

I am getting ready to build your green house, last evening we had a storm with 50 mph winds…they said, so watching where I plan to put the greenhouse, I wondered if it would stand if I anchor on sides, if the top would hold up, I know you have had wind issues, with other structures similar, any suggestions.

Saw your video onthe blackberry failure. You might want to check out the label on Grazonnext HL. I used it with Remedy last July in SE OK on some blackberry thickets in the pastures. As of today, there is no resprout of blackberries under the thickets, which are completely dead. Yet I have grass and some pokeweed coming back. I can’t remember what the label says about soil residue, but evidently there isn’t much or I wouldn’t have the poke.

I’ll have quite a few lambs for sale in June and July.
There will be about 10 boys and 10 girls.. and all of them look great… best I’ve ever had.
The boys will be $150 and the girls $200.
I usually wait till fall to sell the girls, because they will bring more then, but I will sell them early if you want them.
      Where are you located?
      thanks,

Just found your website and am enjoying your video library. I especially appreciate the excellent sound quality. Bad audio is prevalent amongst the how-to web videos and it’s the first reason I’ll quit watching. Also wanted to let you know the free shed plan link is NOT sending the plan as promised. He’s just collecting email addresses. So after submitting my email as necessary to get the free pdf file, all I get is a reply with links to other plans for sale. I hope you remove the link.

I covered my garden with mulch from the power company tree trimmers, this fall, and a few weeks ago I planted potatoes. I made sure they were down in the dirt and then covered with about 4-5 inches of material……My question is as the plants starts coming thru the mulch what do I do. With normal planting I would continue to pile the dirt up but what do I do in this situation???????

I was curious where in Texas? I am in Austin and I would like to see the solar battery set up. I have been able to figure out the green house and I modified it to fit an aquaponics system but I want some solar power to keep the fish pump going in case of emergency. Please advise if you might be interested in helping me understand I am wanting to get something done before winter, I would like to run a small heater to keep the fish at a nice temp of no lower that 60 degrees…..LOL

    • admin
      Posted September 12, 2013 at 9:38 am | Permalink

I have taken half of the batteries from the battery bank, and done other projects with them, so it is not intact, as it was in the video anymore.
I am by NO means an authority on solar. It seemed pretty simple and I tried it (without killing myself or anyone else… yet), but would recommend you get someone that really knows their stuff to help you.
But… in my experience, I’m not sure you could do “heat” on solar. Making heat from electricity takes a LOT of power. If I was you, I would consider some kind of wood-fired or gas fired system.
      Hope that helps
BTW, I am in ETX about 250 miles from you

Thanks so much for your comment. I LOVE the fact that you want to become more self-reliant. Now… the bad news…
The “PDF” is now an Ebook on Amazon, and they have exclusive rights to it.
I priced it VERY cheap. Take a look at it here on my STORE page. Look at the bottom of the CATEGORIES. Let me know if you have any problems finding it.
Also, I will be making a video (and posting here) concerning an emergency power station for your home. It won’t be very expensive, and it can keep your fridge and lights running till the lights come back on. Pretty cool… so come back. If you are subscribed, I will send out a letter letting you know when it’s ready.
As for links concerning self-reliance, The Survival Podcast is a favorite of mine, as well as Survivalblog.com. Neither are far out kooks, just good info that you can search out their archives and get stuff on just about ANY subject.
So, check out those and consider getting my Ebook … and build you one !
      thanks,

        Hi,

thank you for the information of how to build a green house. I am very thrilled about the prospect of building a greenhouse and I plan to build one this September.

I have a question. I notice that you are based in Texas. Where I am from (Virginia beach) I realize that Texas have warmer climate. What advice do you have on heating the greenhouse. Thank you.

I have to say, your videos are the most informative and entertaining I’ve seen so far. I just finished building your greenhouse up here in Wisconsin where we have about 2 feet of snow. My neighbors must think I’m crazy! We would love to see more videos on raising chickens as we will be getting chicks tomorrow.

      Posted March 26, 2013 at 4:43 pm | Permalink

I think I have several videos on chickens in general, but only the post here that deals with raising from chicks.
In my opinion… If you can find adult chickens (pretty easy to do around here) BUY THEM ! The extra $ is worth it… and you gain MONTHS in egg production.
      thanks for your comment!

AWESOME! I stumbled upon your video along the sidebar on YouTube, while searching out something totally unrelated. I’ve been mulling almost exactly this design in my head for a while. I’d like to widen it, and add a frame underneath that will support horizontal panels, so that the arched ones are raised and connected to the long sides of horizontal ones. Thanks SO MUCH!

Enjoy your videos. I live in sugar land tx and have 2nd ranch south of brenham. Do you know of anyone that builds your style of green house near brenham?

Also, i have grown some tobacco successfully, i saw your video on tobacco growing. How did it turn out?

Look forward to hearing from you. I enjoy your videos!

I don’t know anyone near you building one. Build your own… it is pretty easy.

I don’t smoke, but the tobacco turned out … well… like tobacco, I guess.

I really need someone to come “smoke some” to let me know what it is like, I guess.

Your green house concept rocks! because of its simplicity. Pretty much I can figure it out just from the two youtube vids you posted. Its that straight forward. I do have one simple suggestion tho. The bench boards you installed in the greenhouse. You laid them wide side down. Would setting the wide side of the 2by vertical solve the sag problem?

NOW to the real reason for my post. I noticed in your second vid on the green house you had also built what looked like a duck pen based on the same principles. The roof line was lower than the green house, and it looks like the only thing you changed in the design was the width of the cross pieces. What width did you use for that design?

    TIA!

    • admin
      Posted March 5, 2013 at 9:22 pm | Permalink

the shelves COULD be set vertical instead of horizontal, but with the heat coupled with the water inside, I think they would warp too.
I’m pretty sure the “duck pen” is 12′ wide (cross piece) and 18′ long. For skids (instead of wood) I used the metal channels off an 18′ overhead garage door. It’s heavy duty.
The height at the peak is about 4′ if I remember right, but I was not planning on going inside that often, so that didn’t matter.
      Thanks for the kind words,
      alan
